Discover – 2018 Word of the Year

My 2018 word of the year is Discover, to discover the world, to discover new friends and more about those who have been in my life for years, to discover success, and most of all to discover myself. It reminds me how much I have learned and how much more there is to continue learning. It also reminds me to seek new adventures and be open to new experiences. I am learning that my weaknesses are opportunities to discover new skills and strengths. And I hope I never stop dreaming new dreams.

I love the tradition of the New Year and looking forward to a fresh slate to create a ‘new’ me.  In addition to setting goals for the upcoming year, I choose a focus word for the year to remind me of the direction I want to travel. In past years I have chosen the words balance, enough, happy.

Last year’s word was focus. That word kept me on track and narrowed my attention to specific goals. Something new I could learn or take on would come up, and I remember to focus on what I started and my priorities. Sometimes I’d get frustrated at not being able to learn and do everything, but that is exactly why I chose that word. I can’t do everything at once.

I have grown so much over the last few years, and keep thinking I’ll get to a plateau. That I’ll reach that point where I’m content and truly comfortable in my own skin. I’ve made so much progress, and still feel l have a long way to go. But I continue to have a better appreciation of the person I’m becoming. I’m focusing on the journey, because the destination is ever changing.

How many of you choose a word of the year? I’d love to hear your word and the story behind it.
